Świetlówki kompaktowe z amalgamem nie są gorsze od tych z ciekłą rtęcią. Pomimo amalgamu o minimalnej zawartości rtęci (poniżej 2 mg) mają dobre parametry oświetleniowe.
2 mg rtęci to znacznie mniej niż w przypadku innych przedmiotów domowego użytku, jak np. baterie (5–25 mg) czy termometry (500 mg). Blisko 70% elektrowni produkujących energię na nasze potrzeby opalanych jest węglem. Aby wytworzyć energię elektryczną niezbędną do eksploatacji standardowej żarówki, elektrownia musi wyemitować aż 10 mg rtęci.
